Equipment show heralds industry recovery By any measurement, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2002 and IFPE 2002 was an overwhelming success for both exhibitors and attendees. In the aftermath of September 11 as well as an economic slowdown in most parts of the world, show organizers were concerned that attendance at this year's international construction equipment exhibition in Las Vegas would fall short of their projections of 100,000 visitors. However, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2002 beat all expectations. More than 111,439 construction industry professionals visited the 5-day show, which ran March 19-23, to view the latest equipment, products and technology of the construction, construction materials and fluid power transmission industries. International visitors, including more than 7000 Canadians, accounted for 14.4 per cent of the total attendance, tracking comparably with the last show held in 1999. In fact, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2002 established new records for exhibit space and exhibitors with more than 1.84 million net sq ft of indoor and outdoor exhibits (the equiva lent of 38 U.S.-size football fields) was utilized by the 2,112 CONEXPO-CON/AGG exhibitors. An additional 95,000 sq.ft of exhibit space was used by 345 exhibitors at IFPE 2002, North Americaźs largest exposition and conference dedicated to power transmission systems, controls and components. This year marked the first time the two shows were combined. The largest indoor exhibit was mounted by Volvo Construction Equipment who employed some 35,000 sq ft of space to display a total of 32 machines including wheel loaders, articulated haulers, motor graders, excavators and compact construction equipment. According to show officials, the largest outdoor exhibitors was Terex which used 56,500 sq ft followed by JCB and Ingersoll-Rand/Bobcat, with each company utilizing 45,000 sq ft of exhibit space.
